Be Still: A Five-Minute Guided Prayer

· 5:12

A gentle five-minute guided prayer built on Psalm 46:10. Slow down, breathe, bring your burdens to God and rest in his presence.

This guided prayer is for anyone who feels overwhelmed, anxious or simply too tired to know how to pray. It takes about five minutes and needs nothing but a quiet place to sit.

The prayer moves through four simple movements: settling the body, receiving the words of Psalm 46:10, bringing your burdens to God, and resting in his presence without needing to say anything more. You are welcome to pause the video at any point and stay in the silence for as long as you like.

If you find it helpful, try returning to this prayer at the same time each day for a week. For more on prayer when words are hard to find, read How to Pray When You Don't Have the Words and Be Still: Finding Peace in an Anxious World.

Scripture in this video

Welcome. For the next few minutes, you don't need to do anything or be anyone. Find a comfortable place to sit. If it feels right, close your eyes, or let your gaze rest softly on the floor in front of you.

Take a slow breath in, and let it out. Once more: breathe in, and let it go. Notice where you might be holding tension, in your shoulders, your jaw, your hands. Let them soften.

Hear these words from Psalm 46: "Be still, and know that I am God." Let's stay with them for a moment. As you breathe in, silently say, be still. As you breathe out, and know that I am God.

Now gently bring to mind whatever has been weighing on you. You don't have to explain it or fix it. Just hold it up to God, the way you might hand something heavy to a friend. If you can't find the words, that's all right. God hears the prayers beneath our words.

Pray with me, silently or aloud. God, here is what I'm carrying. I can't hold it all by myself. Take what I can't carry, and give me what I need for today.

Now simply rest. There's nothing more you need to say. For a few moments, just be here, in the presence of the One who loves you. If your mind wanders, that's okay. Come back to the words: be still, and know. Let's sit in silence together.

As we close, take one more deep breath. When you're ready, open your eyes. Carry this stillness with you into the rest of your day, and come back to it whenever you need. Amen.
